LOTRO: Mines of Moria Explored
Spacer

We saw a little of the Mines of Moria, the latest update to The Lord of The Rings Online at Leipzig GC last month. The mines have been replicated very well, down to the last detail, such as the 300 steps leading to the great delving.

The mines are dark and imposing, and there are a lot of different monsters lurking under the ground, so adventurers will have lots of new things to fight. There's plenty of new lore to be a part of too, and extra content promised for monster play.

Fans of the books will be pleased with the faithful replication of various areas, and fans of the films will recognise key areas such as the great hall. We were shown an overview of the zone, and the developers explained how each section of the mines could be seen as charting the growth of, and growing arrogance of, the Dwarven civilisation.

The Mines of Moria update also adds two new classes - the Rune-Keeper - a hybrid magic user that can both heal, and do damge, and the Warden, a light tank that uses a mixture of shields and spears. The new classes look quite interesting to play, and are both a nice break from traditional, often boring archetypes.

Another thing that was touched on was Legendary Items. These are special, unique items that grow with you - they can level up, gain special attributes and bonuses, and have their own quests. The system is incredibly detailed, and gives you yet another way to customise your character. It has often bugged me to see other characters using the same magic staff or sword as me in other games, so it will be nice to have something really unique for once.

You aren't just limited to a Legendary Weapon either - you can have up to five 'Class Items', and each one can be levelled up and customised, giving you lots of freedom.

Each item has slots for 'relics' - a bit like sockets in Diablo 2, except that these relics are obtained by deconstructing Legendary Items that you don't want. These relics add bonuses to the stats of the Legendary Items you equip them to, adding yet another layer of depth and customisation.

Turbine have also introduced some new features to the Traits system, in the form of Legendary Traits - these are a form of 'advanced trait' - so if you pick a group of traits from one Trait Set, you will unlock more advanced Traits that follow that theme - you don't have to take these, you could make your character a jack of all trades instead, but there is a reward for people who choose to specialise in one thing.

The Mines of Moria looks like a very promising update - if you want to check it out, it is in the final stages of Beta at the moment and players across North America and Europe are currently invited to sign up - the beta is still closed, but it's worth signing up to see if you get an invite.
