CryENGINE 2 Shown at Leipzig GCDC
Spacer

Cevat Yerli of Crytek showed off CryENGINE 2 at his Leipzig GCDC keynote today, and gave his thoughts on the future of computer game graphics.

Yerli believes that over the next few years we will see current rendering technologies reach their limit in terms of quality and realism, and that we will see more games with photo-realistic graphics, but that the 'uncanny valley' factor may start to become apparent. The 'uncanny valley' factor can be seen when you have a game with, for example, very realistic graphics, animation, and sound, but where the characters behave in an un-realistic way. When you reach a certain level of realism, anything un-realistic starts to stand out, and break the immersion.

Yerli said that he thinks that as more games reach top quality in terms of graphics, we will see more games trying to differentiate themselves in other ways - with new art styles, game play, and innovations in other areas.

One interesting remark he made was that he expected the new 'next generation' consoles to come around in 2011-2012, and that they may be needed from a developers point of view even sooner than that. While it's natural to assume that the Microsoft will release a new console within the next few years, Sony often talk about their 10 year plan for the PS3. It is possible that they could release a Playstation 4 and continue to support the PS3 the way they are now supporting the PS2, but if we really are reaching the limits of the current generation of consoles, does the PS3 really have seven years left in it?
