Leipzig GCDC Day 1 Review Part 2
|
 |
Monday afternoon at the Leipzig GC saw some interesting keynotes, including Michale Capps discussing Gears of War 2.
There was also a panel on the future of mobile gaming - something which is really taking off now, with games such as Reset Generation garnering high scores even on web sites which typically focus on PC gaming. We're not up to the stage of World in Conflict or Crysis on your mobile, but the games are certainly getting a lot better, and are starting to offer a decently engrossing gaming experience.
There was also a panel on in-game advertisement, which recieved a mixed response - developers may like the idea of squeezing a few more dollars out of each install, but they need to remember that gamers don't want anything impeding their play experience, and having to download a 'patch' containing new ads sounds a lot like an inconvenience that to me!
The post-conference networking party was an interesting experience. Nokia sponsored the event, and as usual handed out something white, with flashing lights - this time a beer mat. Anyone who has ever attended a conference with a Nokia / N-Gage presence probably has something white and flashy or glowy as a souvenir. I wonder where their fascination with those things comes from.
During the party we met a guy from Remedy, the company working on Alan Wake. He couldn't answer any questions about the content of the game, however we did get to see some pictures of the game in its current stage of development. Unfortunately weren't allowed to photograph them, so you'll just have to trust us when we say that the game is jaw-droppingly gorgeous. If you didn't know that the pictures were from a game, you would have assumed you were seeing postcards or holiday snaps.
We also saw some guys from Topware Interactive, who told us that they were currently busy adding the finishing touches to their demo of 'Two Worlds: The Temptation', which will be shown at the Leipzig GC later this week. The stuff we saw running was using old animations, but it sounds like they will have some good stuff to show at their booth, so if you like RPGs and will be attending the GC, it's worth nipping over.
