Gears of War 2 Video from Leipzig GCDC
Michael Capps gave an interesting keynote at Leipzig GC today, explaining the pitfalls of making a sequel to a title of the calibre of Gears of War. Capps explained their working philosophy of 'New, Better, More'. This philsophy helps them to find ways to expand upon, and improve the things that made Gears of War such a popular game.
Capps explained some of the new features that will be present in Gears of War 2, and the improvements that they are planning. Apparently they have made hundreds of tweaks to their cover system, to make it feel more natural and realistic.
There will be more ladders in the game - while that isn't likely to be something that will make you excited, it was amusing to hear that the developers spent a long time working on a system for the ladders, only to finish it too late to include more than one ladder sequence in the original game.
The co-op system is getting tweaked to allow better drop-in, drop-out play, and there will be more things for people to do in co-op mode.
Capps also mentioned chainsaw duels, golf club finishing moves, and monster trucks.
At the end of his keynote, Capps demonstrated one of the later levels of Gears of War 2. As you would expect, the keynote was very popular, and the room was full of people, so we weren't able to get the greatest vantage point, but here's some shakey-hand cam footage :)
