Sunderland's Season
|
 |
Roy Keane was not anyone's first choice for Sunderland manager, one even wonders if he was Niall Quinn's first choice after the history of 'disagreements' between them.
During his first season though, Keane, proved himself to be a natural. Taking a struggling Sunderland team up through the Championship and eventually securing promotion, few would have thought that Sunderland would survive the Premiership with comparative ease.
Admittedly Keane's board decided to take a gamble and splashed cash that they may not have had. After a season down at the wrong end though, the gamble seems to have paid off and they have pulled themselves away from the relegation zone at the critical time of the season.
For those into football betting it looks likely that Sunderland will survive next season, and Blue Square suggests that the odds are fairly good. There have been rumours of Keane being handed an enormous war chest with which to try and improve the side, and if there is one thing that often reaps dividends in the Premiership it's the investment of money. Keane hasn’t yet proved himself to be astute in the transfer market, though he has made some good signings, and it will be interesting to see how he spends the money.
For Keane, as much as anything, it seems to be a question of personality rather than talent. He has assembled a side that are incredibly fit, and work incredibly hard, even if some are technically lacking. The evidence of this is the astonishing number of points that they have secured towards the end of matches, points that have undoubtedly secured them a spot in the Premier League next season.
How far Sunderland will be able to progress under Keane no one can really say. There is such a strange hold over the top half of the Premiership that it seems unlikely Sunderland will be able to compete in the near future, if they are to climb up the table next season, though, Keane is the man to take them there.
