Rangers in Europe
|
 |
The season that Walter Smith's Rangers team have experienced has been nothing short of remarkable. From a team that have stood in Celtic's shadow for the last few years to competing on four fronts is an astonishing testament to the talent of Smith and his sidekick, Ally McCoist.
McCoist himself does not seem like the ideal choice for an assistant manager, certainly he is a Rangers and Scotland legend, but the persona portrayed on a Question of Sport suggested a lack of seriousness that would not have left him ideally suited to the pressures of helping manage a top flight football club.
McCoist and Smith certainly have something about them though, and despite battling horrific fixture congestion that could see them play 7 matches in 17 days, they still look like they have a fair chance of adding the Scottish League and FA Cup titles to the Scottish League Cup Title that they have already won.
The UEFA Cup, though, is a different story. Blue Square Football Betting suggests that things will be tight between Rangers and their Russian opponents, Zenit St Petersburg, but has the Russians down as narrow favourites to lift the trophy. This is partly to do with the fact that the Russian FA has allowed St Petersburg to cancel four league matches in the run up to the final to allow the side to prepare properly, a luxury that has not been afforded to Rangers.
At some stage, one can't help feeling, Rangers are going to run out of gas. The Scottish league is not tough, but any football match is hard work and the players have been struggling mentally and physically for a long hard season, the strain no doubt will begin to show. For Scottish football and for Rangers it would be a great achievement if they lift a European title, but for those interested in Football betting the smart money, may, unfortunately be on St Petersburg. The Russians are no mugs, this is a team, we must remember, who disposed of Bayern Munich with remarkable ease.
Rangers will continue fighting to the last minute, and if the match makes it to penalties, then few would put money against the mental toughness of a side who believe they are on the verge of greatness?
Current odds from Blue Square Sports Betting:
Zenit St Petersburg 10/11
Rangers 5/2
Draw 9/4
