Milanese Renaissance

Halfway through this season AC Milan looked like a team that were on the verge of completely imploding. Despite claiming the Champions League title, and some revenge, over Liverpool last season, they have never quite looked like a side that were playing to their best.
Milan are aging, led, as ever, by Paolo Maldini who himself is delaying retirement season after season. For youth they find themselves relying on the mercurial talents of Kaka and the emerging threat of Pato, another Brazilian who is said to have a bright future.
From dropping as low as fourteenth, though, Milan have clawed their way back and now with just two matches left find themselves in fourth, sitting in Italy's last Champions League place. On the back of a particularly sweet derby victory over Inter that may yet prove to undo Inter's title campaign they now go into a tricky match against Napoli, a team who sit in mid-table with their season effectively over.
According to Blue Square Apuesta, Milan are strong favourites to win the match against Napoli even away from home and if results go their way could secure Champions League qualification with a match to spare, this would be a great achievement for Ancelotti, after their struggles early in the season.
Despite all their age, Milan are a team that could easily find themselves reborn. Gattuso and Pirlo have a few years in them yet, as does Nesta in the heart of the defence; Kaka is just reaching his prime and Pato can only improve. Milan have also been making noises about signing some truly quality players, with Flamini already confirmed and suggestions that world cup winning full back Zambrotta is on his way back to Italy from Spain.
With the right signings and some luck - and the possibility that the Special One, Mourinho himself - could end up managing the red and black of AC next year, Milan could find themselves once again threatening to take Europe's biggest crown. If you're into football betting, I think a few pounds on Maldini to lift yet another trophy might well be worthwhile.
