Staying Safe Online
|
 |
It is hard to escape the existence of hackers - everywhere you look you see stories about identity theft, hijacked ebay accounts or instant messaging accounts, and stolen runescape passwords.
Believe it or not, most of these so called hackers don't gain access through complex security holes or clever code exploits - sure, some of them do, but the biggest vulnerability for most people is their password.
Many people still have silly passwords such as their name, or something silly such as 12345.
Even if your password is something more difficult to guess, when was the last time you changed it?
You should try to remember to Change your password frequently. Also, be wary of using the same password for every account you have.
In the ideal world, you should have a different password for every account, but considering how many things require you to log on these days, this is not realistically possible without you having to either write them all down, or use passwords that are too easy to guess - such as 'myspace1' for 'myspace' - that would, naturally, be worse than having just one, difficult to guess, password for everything.
A sensible solution is to have one password for things that aren't too important - forum accounts, and sites that offer free membership, for example. Then have another password for your email and accounts that you really care about such as online games or online banking.
That way, if one account gets compromised, you won't have to worry about the hacker being able to access other accounts with that password.
You should still remember to change the password for each account frequently. Just to be safe.
If you ever find that your computer has been infected with a virus or trojan, or your PDA gets stolen, make sure that the first thing you do is change all your passwords - especially if you are unable to determine what the purpose of the virus was. It is possible that it could have been a keylogger, or have found stored passwords on your computer, and 'called home' with them.
If you aren't sure how to change passwords for an account - some instant messaging accounts, for example, have a tendancy to hide the option away within the client, then maybe this change password guide will help you.
It may seem like a lot of hassle to have to change your login details frequently, but it is worth it. I once had my Eve Online account banned because it was hijacked by gold farmers - trying to convince customer service staff that the account honestly was not under your control at the time is not a fun experience. I got the account back - but it took more than a week for them to reinstate it - a week worth of skill training time that I will never be able to recover.
Thankfully, they were only using my account to traffic money - reading through the transaction log it turns out I was proffiting a small amount of ISK (Eve's version of money) each time. Other people may not be so lucky, and could find their in-game balance - or real life bank balance, totally emptied by a hacker.
Don't let the same thing happen to you!
