Eve Online Diaries - War
|
 |
In the universe of Eve Online, you can't escape combat and danger. Almost every capsuleer – as they call the pilots, will have experienced war at some point. Unless you have chosen to stay a member of the starting academy for your chosen race and career, you will quickly learn that the universe is an exciting, but unforgiving place.
This post, and those that will follow over the next few weeks, will tell the story of a war in Eve Online. I won't give names here – the details of who, where, and why aren't important – there's the official Eve Online forums for that kind of discussion and the politics and in-jokes that inevitably come along with it. This little diary is for people who don't play Eve – or those who have just started, but aren't out in the lawless regions of 0.0 security space – to get an idea of one side of Eve Online game play.
The Shadow Of War Is Upon Us
My alliance have received intelligence that indicates we will be invaded sometime soon. We've been invaded before, although I was a lot younger then, and didn't take an active role. We've also had little wars before – but they were just people saying they were at war with us so they could legally kill us in places that are usually secure space. You see, Concord, the police force of the Eve universe, don't take kindly to people littering the space around trading capitals like Jita or Rens with frozen corpses!
This war is different – we have lived in our little area of space for a long time now – we have allies surrounding us, stations set up, places to mine, places to build. Our stores are stocked, our industry is thriving, and our pilots are comfortable. But now someone wants to take that from us.
The alliance after our space is a big one. We don't know when they will arrive, we just know they are coming. We've had people probing our defences recently, and we have managed to push them back, but we know that they will just return with greater numbers, and each time they come out, they learn a little more about our strengths and weaknesses.
Calls have gone out – our miners have been told to take extra care when out gathering minerals – their ships are weak and defenceless against a more militarily minded attacker, but someone needs to get those ores. Our combatant pilots have been told to be vigilant – patrol our space, gather intelligence, and take care when on the outskirts of our space.
Our producers have swapped to war mode – production has switched almost exclusively to ships, weapons, and warfare related fittings.
War is expensive in Eve Online – ships range from a million or so for a small frigate to hundreds of millions for a battleship and all of its guns and other equipment – and then you have your medical fees for setting yourself up with a new clone after you die. Our alliance will provide some basic ships, but it still costs a lot to prepare for the battle ahead.
The journey from our space to the safety of Empire space is a long one, and fraught with danger, but people still try to do it – prices are high in the lawless regions, and there are some things, such as skill training books, that are only available in Empire. Those with the capability to make the journey – either ships stealthy enough, or just plain big enough to soak up some damage, make regular runs back and forth to help others get the essentials they need.
At the moment, things are quiet – everyone is busy stockpiling what they can, and orders have gone out to prepare our defences. Some people are nervous, some people can't wait for the action to get started.
A scout reported last night that there were 110 enemies waiting at the solar system just next to ours – it was a breakdown in his comm system – he meant 10 enemies – but the comm chatter that ensued gave an idea how people really feel.
Some of our pilots are pulling very long shifts – spending the quiet daytime hours protecting key trade routes, and then staying in their ships on an evening to defend outposts under attack. You can tell that some of them are tired at times – it shows in chat, and you can hear it in ventrillo, but people, mostly, don't bicker or point fingers. We have lots of Fleet Commanders, and they are working together – supporting each other, and keeping morale high while we wait for the fight to come to us.
As a veteran of many game universes that claim to have sides and warfare, I have to say there's something about this universe. There are lots of worlds with PVP combat, but usually it's easy to just walk away – who cares if you loose today? You can just come along and take the place back tomorrow. While the same is true in a way for Eve, I don't think anyone is willing to go down without a fight – our stations, towers, and facilities aren't just buildings that can be replaced – they're home. I only just moved my exotic dancers up there, and I sure don't intend to let those girls fall into anyone else's hands!
